For 20 years, the Age of Wonders series stands for outstanding strategy game. With the latest creation, Age of Wonders: Planetfall, the 4X lap strategy changes the setting and, for the first time, also breaks out on consoles. Instead of elves and dwarfs, it takes you in the latest series part into space. However, in addition to the science fiction scenario, the game keeps some more playful innovations ready. Complex game mechanics, which provide even among seasoned genre professionals for sweats, make the entry for newbies not easy. We provide you with useful tips and tricks for beginners to make your first hours easier.
1. Expand and take
When Age of Wonders: Planetfall drops you on the world map for the first time, you probably have no idea what to do first. After the tutorial familiarizes you with the basic game mechanics, in the first mission you will be slain by a number of menu windows, tasks, and research trees.
First focus on expanding and capturing new sectors, as this will help you generate resources faster. And they ultimately decide on victory and defeat. Just move a unit to the flag of a sector and take it, which takes a round.
If the sector belongs to you, you can click on the flag to select which resource is to be mined. It is important to understand that each sector brings benefits in other resources. There is more energy in one area, maybe more food in another area. Focus on the benefits of each sector and, first and foremost, ensure that the flow of any resource is constantly maintained.
2. Plan your colony in advance
In Age of Wonders: Planetfall you start with a colony. However, you can gain several new ones during the multi-hour missions. However, at the beginning you should at least be very clear about how you should develop your colony. Here, too, resources play a decisive role again.
At the end when you allow more colonies to build new buildings, good planning is crucial to the game. Slowly, but surely, open the path from your base to the next level. Make sure to engage the intermediate sectors to collect various resources to keep everything in balance as far as possible.
3. As soon as possible, explore the map and collect the neutral resources
At the beginning of a game, you should also build new units in your base as quickly as possible and send them to all areas of the map. So, you can clear the fog of the war and you get a better overview of which areas you should push first.
At the same time, however, your units can also collect the neutral resources, such as the Kosmit, before the opponents snatch them out of your nose. Kosmit can be found in deposits scattered throughout the map or in camps guarded by opponents. There are no other ways to get the rare material. You need it to make advanced units and upgrades.
4. Keep an eye on the trees development
There are two researches and development trees in Age of Wonders: Planetfall. One for the military and the other for social aspects of your colony, in which you gradually rise in rank. While the first areas of both trees are essential, you will have to choose a path relatively quickly.
Both trees are composed of a variety of active and passive skills, upgrades for units and buildings, or improvements in resource production. In which aspects you should invest the talent points depend on your personal style of play. In AoW Planetfall, many paths lead to victory, for example through diplomacy, war or exploration.
At the beginning of a game, decide what you want to focus on and then choose skills that are useful for your style of play. Take the time to study the skills carefully and consider how they might be useful to you.
5. Finish building faster
In many browser games you can have buildings under construction completed for a real money fee immediately. This is also possible in Age of Wonders: Planetfall, but luckily you will not be asked to pay. However, this feature is never explicitly mentioned by the game.
Simply click on the development of your colony and select the construction of appropriate buildings or units. Now you have the choice to use energy to complete the construction immediately. This makes the resource a little more useful than the others in the game, allowing you to expand much faster. This option is available to you once per turn, but use it wisely and only when you have enough energy in excess. If your production comes to a standstill due to a lack of power, the new base will be of little use to you.
6. Keep your colony in a good mood
The whim of your inhabitants has a huge impact on just about any game mechanics, as well as the random events that can overtake you in the course of a game. Always keep an eye on the mood of your people and ensure that your residents are always in a good mood. You can do this, for example, by building certain buildings that increase the quality of life.
Satisfied citizens, for example, are needed to train new colonists. This in turn requires her to settle new sectors. If the mood of your charges so goes into the cellar, you are in a dilemma and cannot explore the map further.
7. Diplomacy brings new units
Especially at the beginning of a game, training new units feels like forever. It is much faster if you have a good relationship with the NPCs from the beginning. Once you’ve got them on your side through minor side missions, you can hire military units from them with Influence Points, who will assist you from now on in the battles.
Especially since the war in Age of Wonders: Planetfall is inevitable. There is always somebody who does not like the color of your trousers and who will suddenly declare war on you sometime. Knowing an ally by your side who goes to war with you is crucial to the game.
8. Maintain relationships
However, relationships with AI players have many other benefits. With allies, you can take action, gain resources, claim sectors that have been annexed, or just make sure that your civilian population does not experiencing civil unrest.
In addition, from time to time, your allies will give you optional side-tasks that can be completed quickly as you pass by and also reward you with additional bonuses. However, caution should be exercised in the relationship with your allies because they can resolve an alliance as quickly as you have formed it. Try to meet their needs, but without neglecting the needs of your own people.
9. Build several strong armies
Fights are inevitable in Age of Wonders: Planetfall. It’s just the nature of the game. While you start with only one army at the beginning, as soon as possible you should merge further units into an army, which should be equal to the first one. After all, the dangers lurk in all areas of the map.
If units fall in combat, you should immediately refill the vacated seats. Also, make sure that you equip your soldiers or vehicles with modifications, for example, to increase their defense or the damage caused. An injection for self-healing cannot hurt either because blessing a unit in the fight the temporal, it is history.
Also, be sure to assign hero units to the armies as soon as you unlock them. These are particularly strong and come up with unique skills that often influence the course of a battle crucial. In addition, it is advisable to integrate a healthy mix of offensive and defensive units in your troop, because without support you are almost no chance, especially in the later game.
10. Tips for fighting in the Age of Wonders: Planetfall
In the battles, Age of Wonders: Planetfall turns into a classic turn-based Battle system, as you know it from XCOM 2, for example. Anyone who has ever gambled a modern round strategy game will quickly find their way in the battles. Move your units across the map, being careful to position them behind the cover. Use Surveillance Mode when out of range, so your units instantly fire on enemies approaching you. So far, so well known.
Again, it is important that all your units are equipped with any modifications that will give you a decisive advantage in combat. In addition, you should keep an eye on the operations that can be found in the bottom right of the screen. These are essentially devastating attacks and maneuvers, most of which you unlock through the research and development tree and vary depending on which race you choose.
Some of the operations, such as air raids or alien diseases, you can use directly in the battles, others, however, are performed on the world map, before you plunge into the fray.
In the battles themselves, you should take the time before your turn to scrutinize the battlefield. What obstacles await you? Where do you find the best cover options? Where can you best flank the enemies? If you control the battlefield, you have almost won.
Winning bouts will make your units rank higher, which makes them stronger. Leaders and heroes, on the other hand, come up with a real-world RPG system, where you can assign new active and passive abilities with unlocked talent points. While you gain many skill points during the course of a game, you never earn enough to unlock all skills. So choose wisely and never neglect the valorization of your characters.
